Book 1: STORM & SKYE- THE LOST ISLAND OF MAGICON

When the twins Storm and Skye Droydel escape from an orphanage, their innocent questions lead to mystery and intrigue.  Embarking on a quest to find their mother, who mysteriously disappeared, and their Halfelven father, they encounter Captain Neutrinos, Commander of a magical ship - Mischka. On board the ship is the International Wizardry Committee, on a mission to find the lost island Reverie on planet Magicon.  The island has disappeared along with the Galaxy's Top 20 Wizards.  In this first adventure, the children discover new creatures and fantastical lands across galaxies in a modern-day story of adventure and magic.  "THE LOST ISLAND OF MAGICON" is a brilliant induction into the world of fantasy and adventure for the avid reader!

Swino raised his Finger-wand and suddenly the fire was put out by large buckets of water. Once the water had been emptied out on to the fire, the buckets veered themselves away in the direction of the Weapons room on the IWC.

Gigantic waves crashed against the sides of the ships, hurling gallons of water on to the ships. Everyone was drenched, and the members of the IWC tried hard to stay in control of their situation.

The Mirkseemen, on the other hand, were completely at ease with the torrents of water flushing on to them.

Then the wizards’ ship tossed about madly as two Mirkseemen joined efforts to direct an Energy-stir at them. Juckzy shot a bolt of lightning across at the pirate ship in an attempt to distract the pirates that were on board their ship. The lightning blasted a quarter of the pirate ship away.

Screams of fury could be heard from Captain Morgan. In an instant, his ship was glued with green slimy gunk which kept it buoyant. In an attempt to sink the IWC, large cannon-balls were being blasted from the pirate ship. Swino was already diverting the cannon-balls back towards the pirate ship with his Finger-wand.

As the attacks continued, Zeuroida Zorto and Snibbo Snorkey emerged on deck.

Snibbo directed his Finger-wand at the sky and shouted: ‘Ba dal!’

A mass of clouds gathered over the pirate ship. Unfortunately, the clouds also loomed over the IWC so that when the clouds sent out a torrent of rain, both ships became victims to the heave of the sea.

Limit the Clouding or else we’re ALL going to drown!’ Neutrinos shouted to Snibbo.

Snibbo repeatedly flung his hand upwards trying to call on another Clouding command.

‘I ... I can’t seem to stop any of the Clouding - something’s gone wrong!’

Shopping at the evening market in the city of Elos proved to be exciting.

The markets floated on clouds well above the highest skyscrapers. There were several open stalls and many conventional stores from shoe stores to restaurants.

In addition to the Elves of island Elvinol, there were many tourists like Pixies, Dryads, Gnomes and many others who were window-shopping and happily chatting as they visited the many stores.

Skye was surprised to see a couple of Troll women.

The Trolls wore dresses a few sizes too small for their large, irregular build. Their huge earrings sat awkwardly on their extra-large, hairy ears. Their faces were painted with great quantities of makeup but this still did not hide their hairy warts and stubbly skin.

Skye had to suppress a giggle as she saw another Troll woman walk out of a hair salon. The hairdresser had probably tried her best to comb down the hard, unruly hair but as soon as the lady emerged from the salon, clutching a tiny red handbag, a small bird landed on her head and began scratching in earnest. She had obviously not noticed and continued walking with her head held up high, assuming that the many stares were because of her fashionable hairdo.

They walked into various clothes stores where virtual mannequins went through a series of changes to give them a sense of the available fashion.

They went to shoe stores where the shoes automatically fitted on to one’s feet and provided self-criticism such as: ‘A bit stuffy. Perhaps a bigger toe end?’ or ‘Pretty little feet, how sweet!’

This pleased many customers but was met with disapproval from an embarrassed few.

Skye was pleased with a particularly versatile pair which Maena promptly paid for, watching her interest in the shoes. The pair could change into four different styles and colours depending on the wearer’s outfit.

‘Thank you, Elmio!’  Skye said, overwhelmed by the lady’s thoughtfulness. ‘You’re so kind.’

In return, Skye got a pair of Snooze shoes for the old Elf woman. Once worn, the wearer would receive a relaxing massage that was guaranteed to make the wearer fall asleep. Maena was so surprised and happy, she squeezed Skye so hard that it almost knocked her breath out of her.

After walking down a few streets, they came to Neburik’s Hobby Shop run by a Satyr. Inside the shop, several creatures were seated, engrossed in a game of Mindwarp.

‘Please come in, ladies,’ the Satyr said, walking on his hind, goat legs to them, smiling charmingly. ‘What can I help you with?’

Captain Neutrinos Nimbo of the IWC is in need of an antidote after a mysterious poisoning on board the magical ship Mischka. In order to save the Captain, the Flying Salesman - Filan - may have to risk his own life. And that's just the beginning of another suspense-filled adventure!

The twins, Storm and Skye, once again find themselves in a deadly situation when a Talisman is stolen from the holy Pterodactyl, Triptomus, (who guards planet Magicon's portals).

Will they be any closer to finding their parents and will they be in time to save Magicon?

‘Skye, watch out!’ Storm Droydel shouted, seconds too late as his sister slumped down in a heap on the grass. An excited Leprechaun ran out from behind a bush, giggled and did a little victory dance.

‘One down, one to go!’ he shouted in a squeaky voice. ‘Who’s next?’

He squinted at Storm and laughed maliciously, his small frame shaking with laughter. He raised his hands dramatically, but Storm concentrated as hard as he could, summoning every bit of energy that he could muster for a spell to raise the dust and sand: ‘Dhūl, bālu, uthnā – dushman maro!

There were just so many spells – he hoped that he had recited the correct Sandination spell.

A small whirlwind of sand emerged from a dry patch of ground and slowly became larger and larger, all the time sucking up all the ground dust, leaves and sand. It moved in its micro-cyclonic intensity towards the Leprechaun. The Leprechaun decided against outrunning the sandstorm, quickly thinking which counteract spell to use.

Lautānā,’ he screamed frantically, trying to use Repellation to return the whirlwind to Storm. Storm just increased the intensity and speed of the sandstorm until the Leprechaun turned and ran, leaving the demarcated area.

‘ONE POINT ALL,’ a loud voice announced. ‘Let’s break for lunch before the start of the next session.’

Storm walked over to Skye, who by this time, was sitting up and looking glumly at the score board.

‘I stink at this!’ she said angrily as Storm offered her a hand to stand up. ‘I’m losing us points - I’m sorry. It must be the anxiety but I blanked out – I just can’t remember any spells. Mischka is going to be pretty mad at me.’

‘Don’t worry, Skye,’ Storm replied. ‘Maybe the next session will be better. Just get 2 points and you should manage a pass in Applied Magic.’
